Things of the Past
Use the past tense with possessive pronouns (“my,” “your,” etc.) to describe past possessions, relationships, favorites, etc.

Q: Where was your apartment?
A: My apartment was near campus.

Q: What was her favorite subject?
A: Her favorite subject was math.

Q: Who was his advisor?
A: His advisor was Dr. Brumley.

Try to answer questions in a short but complete sentence.
(o) My favorite subject was math.
(x) Math. (not a complete sentence)

Talking about Higher Education

● Use “go to” if somebody asks which school you attended.
(o) I went to Ingram University.
(x) I graduated Ingram University. (unnatural)

● Use “graduate from” to emphasize graduation.
I graduated from college in 2015.

● In North America, “college,” “university,” and “school” can all mean the same thing.
(o) He went to school in the US, but not to Harvard. He went to Yale.
(o) He went to college in the US, but not to Harvard. He went to Yale.

● “Major” can be used as a noun or a verb.
What was your major?
What did you major in?
